Lab Mission & Values

The BEAR lab is committed to:
  1. Conducting rigorous, multi-method research on social threat and reward processes in childhood and adolescence, with the goal of informing how and why anxiety disorders and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) in youth with primary anxiety disorders emerge during childhood and adolescence. Ultimately, we hope this research will improve our ability to intervene early and effectively with youth at risk for anxiety disorders and STBs.

  2. Advancing research through open science and collaboration. We value all of our collaborations and are committed to involving students at all levels (high school, undergraduate, graduate) in the lab.

  3. Centering community needs and engaging the community in all aspects of the research. In line with this value, we work with youth research advisory boards and are committed to scientific dissemination and outreach in our local community.

  4. Reducing inequities in youth mental health outcomes through our research and lab outreach.

  5. Creating an enthusiastic, kind, and supportive environment that allows every lab member to be heard and respected, to learn and make mistakes, to grow as creative and responsible scientists, and to build a meaningful life for themselves within and outside of the lab.

The BEAR Lab is dedicated to fostering a safe, welcoming environment for individuals from all backgrounds. We strive to maintain an inclusive environment and remain open to feedback on ways we can improve this for everyone. We seek to translate psychological science in creative ways and bridge the gap between academia and the community. We encourage all lab members to think critically about these concepts on an individual level and systems level.
